You Can Help Pay the National Debt

You’re patriotic, but are you that patriotic? LAT reports that, in about the last year, the Bureau of Public Debt has collected $7,694,091.70 in voluntary donations to pay down the debt.  My favorite anecdote, about a retired gentleman who’s doing his part:

The Los Angeles Times last fall spotlighted the little-known donations program in a profile of a retired Texas postal worker who donates a portion of his pension, plus whatever he makes from collecting aluminum cans in his neighborhood, for debt reduction.

Atanacio Garcia has contributed $2,997.88, his son said.

LAT notes that a bill to add voluntary debt payments to tax returns is currently awaiting consideration in the Senate.  I will definitely be looking for that line on my tax form next year.
