Don’t Forget This Either.

The Young Americans for Freedom, sponsored by the Columbia University Republicans and the Columbia University Democrats, displayed a 9/11 memorial on Columbia’s College Walk comprised of American flags stuck in the ground to represent the 9/11 victims.  It’s a commendable effort but one that unfortunately fails to acknowledge a sizable portion of the victims:

Apart from the approximately 2,669 United States casualties, 372 foreign nationals (excluding the nineteen perpetrators), representing just over 12% of the total number of deaths, also perished in the attacks.

These numbers are drawn from Wikipedia, so take them with a grain of salt.  But let’s assume the real figures, if they differ, are greater than zero.

I’ve already posted about how our overreaction to 9/11 came at great consequence to ourselves and to other nations.  As we take a moment on the tenth anniversary to legitimately pay our respects to ALL who died, let the above table also serve to remind us that America’s threat is not special or outstanding.  Instead, the relatively minor threat we face from terrorism is a fact of life in much of the rest of the world.
