Hopeful Words on the Taliban from the SecState

“They cannot wait us out,” Clinton says in her prepared remarks. “They cannot defeat us. And they cannot escape this choice.”

Sorry, but she’s living in a dreamworld. I know she’s probably doing it for PR and to build confidence and to reassure allies and all that, but wait us out is exactly what they can do.  Especially when they have a cross-border sanctuary that is obviously not going away anytime soon.

RAND’s How Insurgencies End (Victory Has a Thousand Fathers is also worth a read) asserts that governments tend to win more as counterinsurgencies drag on, but our role in Afghanistan seems less government than foreign occupier propping up an organized crime ring under Afghan President Karzai.  The Taliban are Afghans and we are not.  We have to leave someday; they don’t.
